Construction has begun on First Base, Brighton’s largest homelessness day centre as part of a £600,000 renovation led by Camillin Denny Architects. In partnership with Brighton and Hove City Council the work is funded by the Homes and Communities Agency’s (HCA) Places of Change Programme. Run by homelessness charity BHT (Brighton Housing Trust), First Base is already used by up to 80 men and women each day. Sussex Heritage Trust Award - July 2010

News image
Camillin Denny Architects have won another Sussex Heritage Trust Award for the third year running. Set up in 1998, these awards highlight fine examples of architectural conservation, preservation and rejuvenation projects across Sussex. This year Camillin Denny’s renovation of a five-bedroom villa in Hove was one of three winners chosen from 26 projects in the small scale residential category. At the award ceremony held at Ravenscroft in Horsted Keynes, the judges commented: “A prosperous Edwardian villa elegantly brought into the 21st Century. A high standard of energy conversion, decoration and use of materials and thoughtful reorientation of the house and garden.” The winning villa, dating from 1898, was poorly refurbished in the 1990’s. The strategy developed was to refurbish the house generally whilst respecting its original features as well as creating new private external spaces that connected fully to the internal spaces. Sustainable aspects were incorporated into the design with the inclusion of photovoltaic cells, solar hot water systems, double-glazing throughout, garden irrigation from reclaimed roof water and additional insulation both beneath floors and in walls, ceilings and lofts.

RIBA Brighton Event - April 2010

News image
Camillin Denny Architects gave a RIBA South East talk at the First Base Day Centre for Homeless People at St Stephen’s Hall, Montpelier Place, Brighton. Camillin Denny Architects proposals for the refurbishment and restoration of the homeless day centre were presented along with a description of the buildings history. St Stephen’s Hall is a Grade 2* listed building which was built by John Crunden in 1766 as the ballroom to the Castle Tavern which stood on Castle Square. In 1821 it was purchased by the Prince Regent and was converted into the private chapel of the Royal Pavilion. In 1850 when the Pavilion estate was purchased by the Town Commissioners the Church Commissioners claimed the building and demolished the building brick by brick and re-erected it on the site at Montpelier Place. It was consecrated in 1852 and named St Stephen’s Church. In the 1930’s the building became involved with spiritualism and closed in 1939. It was then ran by the Dicosece of Chichester’s Institute for the Deaf and Dumb until 1974. In 1984 Brighton Housing Trust acquired the building and set up the First Base Day Centre. In 2008 BHT obtained funding from CLG (Communities and Local Government) for the upgrade of their offices, consultation rooms, kitchen, shower and laundry facilities along with the restoration of the original 1766 interiors. Works are due to start in May 2010 with completion in December 2010
